The Mindset Behind the Scalpel
A New Immersive Learning Space From The Protected Airway
We’re excited to share that the latest updates to the Fearless FONA Mindset learning space are now live online, and from June 26th through July 10th, it will be fully installed at the Airway Works Studio in New York City as part of the PAC Open House experience.
- This is not a lecture.
- This is not a traditional airway course.
- This is a fully immersive training environment
One designed to help clinicians confront one of the most psychologically difficult moments in emergency medicine.
The moment when oxygenation is failing, intubation has failed, and decisive action is required.
The Fearless FONA Mindset Has Arrived
This latest version is one of the most ambitious educational environments we have ever created at The Protected Airway. It combines cinematic visual storytelling, procedural strategy, anatomy, human factors, deliberate practice, and immersive design into a single integrated learning experience.
Most airway training focuses on the mechanics of cricothyrotomy.
Very little training focuses on the transition:

- The transition from hesitation to action.
- From fixation to situational awareness.
- From repeated laryngoscopy attempts to oxygenation-first thinking.
- From fear to clarity.
That transition is where many airway disasters truly happen.
The Fearless FONA Mindset learning space was built specifically to explore that space between knowledge and action.
Every part of the space is intentional.
The visual design is dramatic, minimal, emotionally charged, and built to slow learners down enough to engage deeply with the material rather than simply scrolling past another checklist.
Because front-of-neck access is not simply a technical skill. It is a psychological event.
- The true barrier is often not the scalpel itself.
- The barrier is hesitation.
- The barrier is cognitive overload.
- The barrier is uncertainty about when to stop trying to intubate and commit to oxygenation.
Inside the learning space, you will explore:
- Human factors during CICO events
- Fear, hesitation, and delayed action
- Amplification and escalation strategies
- Tactical simplicity under pressure
- Clinically relevant anatomy
- The FONA Playbook and procedural execution
- Preparation systems and the Double Setup concept
- Deliberate practice strategies for long-term readiness
At the center of the experience is a simple principle:
You do not rise to the occasion during a can’t intubate, can’t oxygenate event.
You fall to the level of your preparation.
Experience It Live at Airway Works NYC
This is where the PAC system becomes real.
From June 26th through July 10th, the Fearless FONA Mindset learning space will be fully operational inside the Airway Works Studio in New York City.
Participants will move through immersive self-directed training spaces, interact with large-format visual installations, perform deliberate hands-on practice, scan integrated digital learning content, and work directly with PAC faculty – our Airway Artists in Residence.
There are no crowded lecture halls.
No rushing through stations.
No passive learning.
You move at your own pace.
You get the reps you need.
You engage directly with faculty.
You build durable skills through repetition, reflection, and focused coaching.
The goal is not simply to teach a procedure.
The goal is to transform how clinicians prepare for high-stakes airway failure.
Our Vision for the Future of Airway Training
This installation is also one of the clearest examples yet of what PAC is striving to develop: a hybrid educational ecosystem that blends physical space, digital learning, visual storytelling, procedural training, and human-centered design into a completely different model for medical education.

The Goal
Less passive consumption.
