As a highly-selective, pure ⍺1 adrenergic receptor agonist, Phenylephrine differentiates itself from Epinephrine and Norepinephrine because it causes only peripheral vasoconstriction with no impact on cardiac function. Without an increase in cardiac workload, it commonly serves as an alternative vasopressor for patient’s who cannot tolerate Norepinephrine or Epinephrine because of arrhythmia or angina. Most importantly, the FDA considers phenylephrine to be the preferred vasopressor for treatment of hypotension caused by vasodilation from anesthesia.
