Teaching Telemedicine and using the skills of telemedicine to teach
The Center for Virtual Care leads the way in teaching telemedicine by creating programs for the onboarding and training of clinicians to work successfully in the virtual space across all specialities. Besides teaching telemedicine, they are also using telemedicine to teach: discovering new ways to leverage the virtual care space and reimagining medical curriculum design to meet the challenges of this new era.
Our focus is not on simply replacing in person learning with virtual learning, but redesigning both the digital and physical space to work more effectively together.
To do this means meeting learners where they live by delivering the teaching skills of virtual care clinicians in new ways, and using lessons learned in the virtual care space to spark innovations that have the potential to provide more accessible, affordable, consistent and effective medical education and training to those who need it most.

Redesigning the physical space to integrate seamlessly with the virtual space
A learner uses a pop-up training space specifically designed for virtual learning. Including self guided practice and expert coaching.
Our education team at the CVC is working on reimagining how curriculum design can be enhanced through this integration of “Virtual Care Learning”. Training programs like the Protected Airway Course leverage the potential of skilled telemedicine providers and clinical educators by developing new learning delivery systems that provide enhanced opportunities for hands on training that before now would have been required to take place in-person and often far from clinical spaces.

Expert remote coaching
Learners can access the remote clinical faculty for real time expert coaching, troubleshooting a specific problem and feedback.
Our focus is not on simply replacing in person learning with virtual learning, but redesigning both the digital and physical space to work more effectively together. Virtual care learning is integrated into physical spaces and employ, graphic design, interactive digital self-guided tools and remote coaching techniques that allow of a simple, cost effective and wide reaching teaching style that is already being used by multiple departments in our institution to improve patient safety through enhanced knowledge translation that is integrated seamlessly into provider workflows.

Training Spaces for Live Demonstrations

The Virtual Care Studio allows CVC faculty to give live demonstrations of important techniques remotely to large groups in multiple geographic locations simultaneously. While expert faculty can then give remote one on one coaching.
