transforming the learning space in medical education
WELCOME
Welcome to the PAC! All of you are here because of your personal commitment to medical education, your experience, and your talent as educators, and we are so grateful to you for joining us and helping to make this upcoming PAC event what it is. We could not do this without you. 🙏 ❤️

We have worked hard not only to make this a great experience for learners but also for you the educator. As educators, we know how depressing poorly designed education and lack of engagement can be. Our goal is to free you as educators from giving lectures or simply talking at groups of passive learners, and instead give you the opportunity to engage with them on a personal level: one on one providing your expertise and feedback to them in a coaching style that is customized to their needs and satisfying to everyone.
To that end, we’re excited to introduce to you this completely new learning delivery style in medical education. Don’t worry, it does not require you to learn any new teaching skills. Our design goal is simply to provide an enhanced platform that will allow you the freedom to do what you do best. Teach. This document is intended to give you a brief overview of the format, basic essential information (like where and when to be come) and what to expect for the day.

pac explained
We are more than an airway course. Our work seeks to transform how we learn in medical education by developing the next generation teaching styles that meet learners where they live, and provides a more accessible, more engaging, effective, and inspiring learning experience.
We do this through partnerships with experts in medical education across all disciplines, and design experts outside of the traditional boundaries of medicine like the School of Visual Arts Design for Social Innovation, Cornell Tech and other artists here in NYC. Our work applies design thinking to the complex problems of learning in today’s healthcare environment, and explores the boundaries between digital and in physical, remote and in person learning.
At PAC, our creators have designed a series of uniquely immersive, interactive, and self-directed learning experiences that strengthen airway knowledge by addressing all the elements required for clinical mastery. Foundational knowledge, critical concepts, procedures, planning and logistics, teamwork, human factors and personal experience are all integrated seamlessly with expert coaching and high fidelity simulations into a unified learning experience that provides learners with a powerful opportunity to improve their airway management skills.

the digital space
The backbone of the system is our innovative new website that allows for simultaneous interactive learning across every space, and every theme based topic in the PAC universe throughout the entire day of an event and beyond. The website helps us to create a truly immersive, interactive and self-directed learning experience unheard of before in medical education.
No more classrooms, no more shuffling groups of learners from one place to another on a fixed schedule, no more one size fits all training. Instead learners decide what they want to learn and how they want to learn it. This is goal directed adult learning done the right way.
the physical space
We do all of this by designing the website to work seamlessly with our graphically designed posters and embedded QR codes that connect the digital content to the physical space. Each theme based poster explores one aspect of a specific topic like video laryngoscopy or the surgical airway. Put together in series within the physical space learners are exposed to big picture ideas, core concepts, personal experiences, and procedural skills with audio and video tools that provide guided hands on practice opportunities with the equipment provided in each installation.

Expert Coaching
Because learners are able to direct their own learning, faculty are also free from having to teach in a one size fits all format. It allows them to tailor feedback and teaching to the individual. Instead of talking or lecturing at groups of passive learners, faculty are able to ask “show me your technique” or what would you like to work on.” They are able to offer customized feedback and then redirect learners back into the self-directed portions of the installation for a more focused exploration of the content. This higher level learning benefits both learners and educators and most faculty find this new format incredibly fun and satisfying.
HOW TO BE A COACH
freedom to teach at a high level
This form of coaching requires a bit of a shift in the usual thinking. Learners get to explore all the self-directed learning space first. This allows them have worked on their own, its time for faculty is to ask participants what they want to work on? So before you jump in and start teaching, we want you to make learners show you something. “Show me your technique” or “what part of your skillset do you want to work on” should be the first thing you say to them. This will allow you to get the frame and level of the learner and allow you to understand how you can best help them in the areas that they need improvement.

The SIMulation Challenges
Challenges are designed to bring together all the core concepts and skills within the self-directed and coaching portions of the installation. They run simultaneously with the installations on a set schedule.
Think of the self-directed spaces and the coaching as a huge supercharged flipped classroom for the simulation challenges, which require participants to demonstrate that they are able to deploy their new knowledge and skills in a realistic setting.
Once learners are done with the simulation and the debrief they can take that experience and use it to back into the learning space with a good feedback that will allow them to focus on the areas they need to review. This iterative process of self-directed learning, coaching, simulation, back to self-directed learning is part of the design.

how to prepare
We’ve tried to make it a stress free and as fun as possible for faculty. Our experience is that the day is full of great energy and learning and we don’t want confusion to distract from that experience for you or the learners. Here is what you can do to get ready. It should require minimal time. 👇
1
register for the website
The website is free to access but requires you to register. Please go here and sign up and then take a look around and familiarize yourself with the format.
2
Find Your assignment
You can find out what your faculty assignment is here, get contact information for your installation director, who will be co-ordinating the team, and see who your team members are as.
3
visit your learning space
The PAC universe of learning spaces lives here. Now you can go ahead and visit the one you will be teaching at. Get familiar with the material so you know what the learners are experiencing before they come to you. Feel free to join us and add content or make suggestions. We would love to add your experience to the space!

- Saturday, May 14th, 2022
- Where is it?
- At Cornell Medical College at 1305 York Ave.. The entrance is on 69th street. Then follow the signs up to the second floor of the medical school and check in.
- Our volunteers will help get you situated.
- What time should you be there?
- 7am. We try not to make it too early, but there is some preparation involved and a pre-brief before we the teaching starts at 9:00am.

- Is there a set schedule for each learning space?
- Actually no! The doors open for learners at 9am and stay open all day for them to explore until 4pm. Learners can take breaks whenever they want, come back to you multiple times if they need to, or skip a learning space entirely based on their level of training.
- Will there be breaks?
- Yes!. There is plenty of time to take a break. The installations are open throughout the day from 9am – 4pm and each has plenty of self-exploration content that does not require faculty to be there all the time. We have also divided up the coverage so that there are opportunities for faculty to explore and have fun too.
